Now in its 12th year, the Lew Sanborn Accuracy Meet came to Skydive Spaceland in Rosharon, Texas, April 23-24. In addition to marking a stop on the North American Cup Accuracy Competition circuit, the event has now become a fundraiser for the Texas Children’s Hospital and the American Cancer Society.
Official practice began Thursday, April 21, with U.S. Army Parachute Team members and cadets from the U.S. Army and Air Force academies, as well as Keith Bergeron, Cheryl Stearns and, of course, the famous Lew Sanborn, D-1, who is an avid competitor at many accuracy meets. Some shortened their practice day for a visit to the Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.
Competition began Saturday morning, but high winds forced chief judge Sherry Schrimsher and judge Madolyn Murdock to close the target to numerous jumpers in the classic accuracy event. However, the winds helped those competing in sport accuracy, which completed by sunset. Kevin Yasuda won first place, with Matt Bessonette in second and Dan Raffaelli in third.
Sunday brought more wind, so the meet was cut to four rounds with Moore and Stearns tied for first place. All the competitors and spectators gathered around the target for the jump-off. Stearns, who just recently returned to skydiving after a severe shoulder injury, couldn’t overtake the determined Moore. Feldt took third. Moore promptly donated his winnings to the Texas Children’s Hospital and the American Cancer Society.
Patrick Chapman won in the intermediate division, followed by Nick Dewhirst and Jon Hagan. Zukowski placed first in the POPS class, with Sanborn second and Dennis Rodgers third.
Next year, the event returns to Skydive Spaceland April 15-16. With the hospitality of Steve Boyd and his cordial staff, it will again mark one of the highlights of the North American Cup and POPS circuits.
