Fine-Tuning Your Formation Skydiving Skills
By Ed Lightle

Maybe your formation skydiving skills are still a bit limited. Here are some pointers to help you take your game to the next level.

Once you've docked, you still need to help fly the formation. Keep looking across the formation to stay level with jumpers on the other side.

Always have a dive plan. A dive plan consists of skills committed to memory, as well as skills to learn and practice. Rehearse the skills you know well and ones you don’t.

Help fly the formation. Once docked on the formation, all jumpers must relax but maintain a good body position, drive forward using their lower legs and look across the formation to remain level with jumpers on the other side.

Anticipate your next move. While waiting for the key to break for the next formation, be thinking about your next move.

Stay put during transitions. To stay in place, jumpers should place their hands in front of their chins while breaking for the next point. It forces them to fly more with their legs.

Fly with your legs. When belly-flying, jumpers can deflect a lot more air with their legs than they can with their arms.

Watch video and read skydiving articles. Refer to www.omniskore.com/results.htm or www.skyleague.com, where you can watch online videos from the last U.S. Nationals or the most recent National Skydiving League competitions. You can also read Dr. John DeRosalia’s Mental Training for Skydiving and Life and articles on www.dropzone.com, www.mariosantos.com/uk_us/articles.htm or in Parachutist for help.

Ask for help. Find a coach, and work on things like leg flying and anticipating the next point. If you can afford several weekend fun jumps, you can afford to pay for a little coaching.

Be honest about your skills. If the load organizer gives you a slot, make sure it suits your skill set. Perform well, and you are more likely to get invited back.
