Mardi Gras in Mississippi
By Laurel A. Rice

Head-down flyers build an 8-way.

February 21-29, 284 jumpers from all over the nation, plus a few from England, Canada, Mexico, South Africa and Brazil, reunited or met for the first time at Gold Coast Skydivers in Moss Point, Mississippi, to celebrate the 11th annual Mardi Gras Boogie.

Freeflyers extraordinaire Dave Brown of the Freefly Training Center and Mike Wittenburg of Team Loki spearheaded the freeflying. Jim Jenkins of team Deguello and big-way organizer Guy Wright worked with the formation skydiving crowd. Chuck Blue and Perry Trowbridge, representing BirdMan, Inc., organized flocking dives and instructed jumpers trying wingsuits for the first time.

The participants in the head-down 12-way gather after their formation attempt.

Three different aircraft offered diversity and fast trips to altitude. Fayard Enterprises brought its tailgate CASA, Trey Holladay flew his crushed velvet and leopard print, techno-music-pumping Super King Air from Skydive Atlanta, and Skydive South Beach supplied its Super Otter.

The Pink Mafia, an all-female skydiving group based at Gold Coast Skydivers, initiated 12 new members and hosted the two Saturday night after-hours parties.

It was a true kinship experience at the 11th annual Mardi Gras Boogie at Gold Coast Skydivers, where jumpers united, broke barriers, set new goals and spread the love.
