This year's focus was large aircraft issues, as Connecticut Parachutists will be operating a Twin Otter this season after two years of piston Cessnas. Kevin Kokoszka, Corey Beaudreau, and Kristin Ricciardelli spoke about canopy issues, including separating fast and slow canopies in a tight, crowded landing area. Hollie Reno and Dave Gerstein spoke about freefall safety, including exit order and separation, tracking, and deployment. Bob Smith Spoke about aircraft safety. Riggers Andrew Nicholson and Matt Connor discussed equipment issues, and demonstrated a reserve deployment using a Sigma tandem rig. They reviewed the reserve deployment system, SkyHook RSL, and AAD operation.

Nearly all of the 60 participants practiced their emergency procedures in the hanging harness, assisted by AFF instructors Rob Szabo and Ariel McManus.

Skydivers with thousands of jumps and skydivers still on student status filled the DZ Saturday morning. Mother Nature saw to it that we would not be tempted to skip the importance of learning with one another and clouded up the sky! This being the FIRST Safety Day at Fly Free Skydiving, we were looking to those with experience to help us make the day a success. The knowledge that swarmed the room was unlike anything most of our newer jumpers had ever experienced. Even with the weather keeping us from jumping, nobody was in a hurry to leave, and the stories just kept on coming. Every single one of our attendees contributed in one way or another. Pilots, jumpers, instructors, students... All brought so much to the table. Although it would have been a great day to make some skydives with some awesome skydivers, it was equally as wonderful to end Safety Day 2010 at Fly Free Skydiving knowing that we are ready to start up a new, SAFE season!

We gave discounted skydives to each person, no matter their experience level, who physically got in the hanging harness and successfully completed their emergency procedures. PD sent demo reserves to jump for the weekend for those jumpers who have never had a reserve ride. Or for those jumpers who are looking to purchase a new reserve. It gave many jumpers the opportunity to have their "first" reserve ride and see how the reserve canopy flys. We had a very successful safety day this year with discussions regarding airplane safety to gear checks.

On that dark and rainy day in March skydivers from all over the state drove a long way, knowing jumping on that day was not going to happen and yet gathered for safety day. Students, regular jumpers, instructors & pilots all came to learn and refresh their safety habits. A open floor form was used so all could participate, keeping in mind that the students who came will soon to be regular jumpers, and jumpers will be instructors. So they can all learn from past mistakes and possible mishaps. We all want to keep the sport fun, but we can't have fun if we are not safe.

A modest group of jumpers of all experience levels turned out for safety day despite foul weather. In addition to staff covering the outline provided by USPA for safety day, participants got the chance answer questions drawn out of a hat. Then the group would further explore examples related to the question. Questions such as: "During high speed group freefall maneuvers, to lose control and decelerate rapidly is?" Answer-Cork. "Name the jump aircraft in which only 10 jumpers can be at the tail of the plane during exit and all other must remain behind the dividing line marked inside that aircraft?" Answer-Skyvan. - sparked interesting and informative discussions that all benefited from. As in 2009, the motto for the year will be "Everyday is a Safety Day."

Overnight snow greeted the 30 participants from 4 different drop zones that met in Vinton, IA for the Paradise Skydives, Inc. Safety Day.
After a pizza buffet, jumpers participated in presentations and discussions on fatalities, freefall safety, airplane procedures, canopy safety, and parachuting emergencies. AFF Instructor Mike Hoy received the Ches Judy award for his dedication to our newer jumpers by retooling the DZ's AFF program as well as building the world's heaviest mock up. The day ended at the DZ with jumpers working on emergency procedures in the hanging harness and reviewing gear check procedures.

The turnout was strong for Safety Day at Skydive Dallas. Over 60 people participated in at least 5 seminars to get a discounted jump and a card for Safety Day Poker. Stacy Falkoneer won a Free Day of Skydiving with the best hand, while Elizabeth Hammond (aided by a case of the sniffles) attended every event and showed up with 11 cards. Over 50 t-shirts were given away to those who climbed in the Hanging Harness. Some Guy in Texas and the Skydive Dallas Staff gave 8 seminars, while the dz gave extra discounted jumps for people who met the manufacturer’s guideline for their canopy size/skill level. One of our younger jumpers helped out by demonstrating a proper tree landing. Way to go Chris! After a full day of safety and skydiving in nice weather, the DZ provided dinner for all the jumpers. The Toga Party that followed made it quite possibly The Best Safety Day Ever.

We decided to try something new this year using a multimedia presentation, which included printed materials, edited movie/movie clips, and a photograph slideshow. Our goal was to focus on what a licensed skydiver goes through when taking a long break from skydiving at Skydive Houston. It starts with who are the S&TAs and safety statistics for the year, then on to manifest, equipment checks, loading and aircraft safety, freefall, canopy piloting and safety, and finally ending with malfunctions.

Low clouds and rain brought the perfect environment for everyone to focus on the excellent safety seminar held at Skydive Superior. The Androsky family welcomed the 38 attendees with a pancake and sausage breakfast. Jumpers came from several other area drop zones, and Team Flew-id was on hand to assist the local instructors with the presentations. Topics were covered two at a time, with breaks in between for harness drills. All of the informative USPA safety day materials were projected onto a movie screen, along with other power point presentations. Attendees were quizzed after each presentation, and were rewarded with accurately launched safety day shirts for their correct answers.

This year’s group of Safety Day participants included many of the 20 jumpers who earned an A license last year and jumpers with thousands of jumps. We enjoyed seeing our regular jumpers after a long winter, and we welcomed some new faces from visiting drop zones.
Rigger Rod Collin discussed equipment maintenance and gear checks. Special attention was given to freefly friendly rigs and the importance of having a main closing loop in good condition on all rigs. This year our dz will enjoy having a PAC 750XL for our main jump craft. Pilot Sam Kelly discussed safety procedures including loading, seatbelts, door, lights, and emergencies. S&TA Ryan Hanold reviewed exit procedures and exit order. Dale Maddox discussed freefall safety, focusing on altitude awareness and the importance of tracking. S&TA Ryan Hanold reviewed the fatality reports from last year. He stressed the importance of using the established landing areas for high performance and standard canopies. DZO Franz Gerschwiler reviewed DZ policies and the upcoming scheduled seminars to be held on a regular basis this season. Whiteboards will be in use at the loading area indicating landing direction, wind speed, and exit order for groups. He stressed the importance of respecting the decisions of the pilot in command. However, if a spotter looks down and feels the spot will not work for his group, he can ask for a go around with no consequence from the pilot or dz management.
Mideastern Regional Director Randy Allison was introduced and addressed the group about changes coming from USPA, including the possibility of electronic voting. He took questions from the group about UPSA.
All jumpers were encouraged to review emergency procedures in the hanging harnesses. Although it was too cold and windy to jump on Safety Day, plans were made to start the season on March 26 when the PAC arrives.

The West Point LifeEvac crew provided an excellent presentation on treating injuries and First Responders' capabilities. Additionally, participants were treated to an excellent seminar on packing...in REVERSE, to simulate the entire deployment sequence and demonstrate common packing errors. Finally, participants were tasked to identify rigging and packing errors on gear that had been assembled and/or packed incorrectly (for the purposes of training).

Safety Day at Skydive Southwest Florida “went off without a Hitch.” Good weather and great fun helped us get through one of the most informative days of the year! We sometimes forget all the little things, but thanks to all of our coaches and instructors, we had wonderful refresher clinics throughout the day. These segments attracted not only our regular members, but students, Staff, the tandems themselves, and the bystanders that were just there for moral support!
