02/22/10 · Chris Needels Receives Highest USPA Honor

Few individuals have had as much positive influence over USPA’s present-day status as Chris Needels, having contributed to USPA’s growth and prosperity since he first joined the Parachute Club of America (USPA's forerunner) in August 1963. Before serving on the PCA Board for six years as a national director beginning in 1975, he was commander of the U.S. Army Parachute Team, the Golden Knights. While a USPA Board member, he chaired the Finance & Budget and Judges Committees and served as Vice President.
He became USPA Executive Director in June 1994, when the organization needed him most, and piloted USPA’s growth to an image in the aviation community unlike any in its history. After almost 14 years as the chief operating officer, and after bringing USPA a new headquarters in Fredericksburg, Virginia, he retired. Now USPA Executive Director Emeritus, Needels continues to serve the skydiving community as a board trustee for the National Skydiving Museum.
At its board meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, the weekend of February 20, the USPA Board unanimously decided to honor Needels with USPA’s Lifetime Achievement Award. At a time and place yet to be determined, the board will honor Needels "for almost a half-century of total commitment to USPA as a board member, officer, executive director, and skydiving museum trustee, providing unparalleled leadership, vision and lasting stability."

02/02/10 · IPC Meeting Wraps Up
The International Parachuting Commission (IPC) of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) concluded their five-day meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, January 31, and here are a few of their decisions:
- Each discipline’s competition rules except style & accuracy were changed, some more than others. (The changes will soon be posted on IPC’s website.)
- Russia will host the world championships of formation skydiving, canopy formation and artistic events, July 31-August 6, 2010, in the eastern city of Menzelinsk.
- Russia will also host a world championship of canopy piloting in Kolomna on August 8-15, 2010.
- Germany will host a world cup of formation skydiving and artistic events August 1-7, 2011, in Saarlouis, (western) Germany.
- A wingsuit working group was formed with Jacqui Bruwer (South Africa) as chair and includes voting members Larry Bagley from the U.S. and Ronald Overdijk from the Netherlands. Taya Weiss (U.S.) and Jarno Cordia (Netherlands) have been invited to join the group as non-voting advisors. The group’s goal is to define and judge no-contact wingsuit large formation records so a recommendation can be made to the IPC for consideration of a new unlinked world record performance category for wingsuit, largest formation. The group will serve for one year.
The USPA competition committee will consider the results of the meeting when they deliberate at their board meeting February 19-21, 2010, in Phoenix, Arizona. The IPC will meet again next January in Montenegro.

01/21/10 · Banič Medal Presented to George H.W. Bush
On Monday, January 18, Slavo Mulik presented the Štefan Banič Parachute Foundation Gold Medal to President George Herbert Walker Bush for his outstanding support of parachuting, at Bush’s office in Houston. Mulik is the founder and president of the Banič Foundation, which was established to recognize those who have made significant contributions to skydiving. The gold medal is awarded annually. The foundation was named for the Slovak inventor who applied for the first U.S. patent on a parachute and who donated the patent to the U.S. Army prior to World War I. Also present at the ceremony were USPA Executive Director Emeritus Chris Needels; Pennsylvania Senator Bob Robbins; USPA President Jay Stokes, who is also a Banič Foundation Gold Medalist; Admiral George Worthington, a Banič Foundation trustee; and Carol Schlichtemeier and Jack Pyland, both members of USPA.

01/08/10 · Dubai Parachuting Championships and Gulf Cup 2010 are Underway
The Dubai emirate on the Arabian Peninsula is hosting a multi-national event that began this week, and the USA has a full delegation participating in all events except female 4-way formation skydiving. The event ends January 17.
Jim Hayhurst and Cheryl Stearns are competing in accuracy landing, Arizona Airspeed is among 15 teams in 4-way formation skydiving, and the canopy piloting event includes Nick Batsch, David Billings, Brian McNenney, Hans Paulsen and Shannon Pilcher, with a second group of four (Albert Berchtold, Ian Bobo, Thomas Hughes and Jonathan Tagle) also vying for medals and money. There is a $230,000 prize purse, with $20,000 going to first-place 4-way and $5,000 for first place in each of the three canopy piloting events: accuracy, distance and speed. The accuracy landing first-place team will earn $20,000 with an additional $5,000 going to the first-place individual. Prize money will be paid down to third place in all events.
"The meet is being run out of two Bell 212 helicopters sing civilian crews," said Head of Delegation Larry Hill, "and they are running pretty efficiently."

01/04/10 · USPA Collegiate Championships Wrap Up
Fighting high winds, low clouds and rain to the bitter end, 103 college students from around the USA wrapped up the 2009 USPA National Collegiate Parachuting Championships at Skydive Spaceland in Rosharon, Texas, on January 2, the final day of scheduled competition. It's the first time in recent memory that the meet went the full five days. Regardless, it was a good meet, and the friendly but competitive jousting for medals went down to the wire.
With status and medals at stake in seven disciplines and the majority of skydivers coming from three military academies—Air Force, Naval, and West Point—it was expected they would do pretty well, which they did. But the competition was not completely dominated by the military—Virginia Tech's 4-way formation skydiving team, VTSD, bested the rest by a large margin, and Jeremy Foster and Cody Edgeworth, from the University of Houston and University of Chicago, took home the gold in 2-way VFS. The sport accuracy first place novice winner was Brad Carrender from Kansas State.
After considerable discussion, the meet director, controller and chief judge decided to award the Most Competitive Collegiate Competitor medal to Alicia Bouges, a senior cadet at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Along with the recognition comes the Istel Scholarship, $500 to be used for education. Because she attends a military school and doesn't need the financial assistance, she bestowed the money to the team VTSD to be used for the same purpose.

12/29/09 · Collegiate Championships in Full Swing
Just over 100 college-age skydivers are gathered at Skydive Spaceland south of Houston, Texas, for the 52nd running of the USPA National Collegiate Parachuting Championships. Several institutes of higher education are represented, such as the Air Force Academy, Georgia Tech, Kansas State, the Naval Academy, UConn, Virginia Tech and West Point. Students are vying for medals in six disciplines: accuracy (including team accuracy) landing, sport accuracy, 2- and 4-way formation skydiving, 6-way speed formation skydiving and 2-way vertical formation skydiving. Registration finished up last night and the first event began this morning, December 29, with accuracy landing. The event finishes up when all jumps are made or on Saturday afternoon, depending, of course, on weather.

12/29/09 · USPA National Collegiate Parachuting Championships Update
In spite of the forecasted rain and low ceilings, all three rounds of team accuracy landing and two rounds of sport accuracy were completed before the heavy rains set in. With four jumpers to a team, Air Force Lawn Darts took first place with a 1.62-meter total. Second went to Air Force Groovy Tap-A-Tune at 2.59 meters and bronze goes to West Point Eenie Meenie Minie Moe at 3.14 meters.
Sport accuracy will start back up in the morning, weather permitting, to finish the third and fourth rounds. There are 60 competitors in the three classes of novice, intermediate and masters. Check back for updates; additional information can be found at uspacollegiates.com.

12/18/09 · Army Parachute Team Celebrates 50 Years
Hundreds of Golden Knights, past and present members of the elite U.S. Army Parachute Team and their families and friends are gathering at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, this weekend to celebrate the golden anniversary of the team’s existence. Initially called the Strategic Army Corps (STRAC) Sport Parachute Team, the original group of 13 was formed to halt the Eastern Bloc countries’ dominance of all international skydiving competitions and record-setting of the day. The team changed its name to the U.S. Army Parachute Team in 1961, and in 1962, adopted the nickname, the Golden Knights. Current team commander, Lieutenant Colonel Tony Dill, claims, “They earned their nickname on the competition field of battle; Golden for the medals they won, and Knights for conquering the skies.”
The official purpose of the team is to compete in national and international parachute competitions, help develop new military parachuting techniques and equipment, and put on demonstrations in support of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command. In 1974, grateful for all the team had done for the sport, USPA recognized it with its highest honor, the USPA Lifetime Achievement Award. The citation reads, “Generous and dedicated sportsmen, celebrated competitors, respected leaders who since 1961 have introduced parachuting at its best to worldwide millions and have brought honor and distinction to the sport.”
USPA celebrates the Golden Knights on this auspicious occasion and congratulates them for all they’ve done for the skydiving community in general and USPA in particular. We look forward to at least another 50 years working with these top-notch ambassadors of our sport.

12/08/09 · U.S. Competitors Claim Two Canopy Piloting Records at World Cup
The 5th World Cup of Canopy Piloting in South Africa held its banquet and awards ceremony this past weekend, with overall gold medalist Jason Moledzki (Canada), second-place finisher Christian Wagner (Austria) and bronze medalist Pablo Hernandez (Spain) taking the podium. Sixty-six competitors from 16 countries were onsite to show their expertise in the three events—distance, speed and zone accuracy. Twelve skydivers comprised the U.S. Team.
"The bad weather has been a surprising feature of this world cup," reported Susan Dixon, IPC webmaster from France. The five-day event suffered from high winds and overcast skies, causing the jury to approve break-of-dawn starts each day of the meet.
The U.S. won a clean sweep in the speed event, with gold, silver and bronze medals earned by Nick Batsch, Greg Windmiller and Shannon Pilcher, respectively. Windmiller claimed a new world record of 2.093 seconds through the 70-meter course. In the distance event, Batsch took third place while claiming a new world record of 181.70 meters, eclipsing his old record of 169.61 meters set at last year’s world championships. "It was a demanding experience, physically, mentally and emotionally," said Windmiller, a member of the U.S Army Parachute Team, the Golden Knights.
Watch for a report in February’s Parachutist.

12/03/09 · U.S. Canopy Piloting Team Competes in South Africa
"The U.S. Team is looking extremely strong this year," exclaims team manager Al Bertchtold in his first report about the 5th World Cup of Canopy Piloting, being held this week in South Africa. Twelve of USPA’s finest canopy pilots—Nick Batsch, David Billings, Ian Bobo, Bryan Buechler, Ian Drennan, Jessica Edgeington, Kevin Love, Dan McAllister, Hans Paulsen, Shannon Pilcher, Mikeal Stevens and Greg Windmiller—are competing in zone accuracy, speed and distance. The event runs from December 1-6.
Weather has been a factor, with high winds and rain closing the course for all of one day. When the weather hold lifted, the second round of speed was completed with Canadian Jay Moledski in first place. Following closely in second through fourth places were Americans Batsch, Bobo and Pilcher. Unfortunately, the event has been marred by two injuries requiring hospitalization and a fatality (none of which involved American competitors).
Next up will be the distance event. Check back often for updates, as well as http://www.fai.org/parachuting/node/1398.

11/16/09 · USPA Seeks Special U.S. Team
Dubai, the largest and most populous state of the United Arab Emirates, is hosting the Dubai Parachuting Championships and Gulf Cup 2010 on the Arabian Peninsula, January 6-18. USPA is seeking competitors interesting in participating as part of a special U.S. Team. The event will include men’s and women’s 4-way formation skydiving, men’s and women’s accuracy landing and canopy piloting. Only those who competed at the 2009 USPA National Skydiving Championships at Skydive Spaceland earlier this year are eligible.
In addition, USPA can name a head of delegation, team manager and team coach, although it is not necessary to fill these positions in order to compete. Competitors may participate as a competitor as well as serve in one of the positions of leadership. There is no USPA team funding available for this event.
More information about the championships can be found at www.emiratesaviation.org. Those who are interested in participating or filling a leadership position may contact competition@uspa.org with any questions. To be considered for selection, teams and individuals must submit their names to USPA prior to December 1. Official registration is due by December 15.

11/13/09 · Advanced Aerospace Designs Issues Product Service Bulletin
Advanced Aerospace Designs (AAD), manufacturers of the Vigil and Vigil II automatic activation device, recently released a product service bulletin, PSB-5, regarding a recall of a batch of cutters manufactured in December 2007. Following a low main deployment and subsequent activation of a Vigil II last September, the cutter body separated from its base, and the closing loop of the reserve container was not cut during the activation. This defect was caused by an error during the final crimping of the cutter body to its base. The cutter manufacturer and AAD have declared that the problem with the one cutter was an isolated case, and no other cutters are affected. Two cutters from the same batch were activated by AAD for test purposes, and found to work correctly. However, AAD has decided to recall the 199 cutters manufactured in the same batch on December 2, 2007, and will replace the cutters free of charge. AAD recommends that the affected cutters be replaced at the next reserve repack.
Because the cutters are field replaceable, the serial number of the cutter itself must be used to positively identify an affected cutter. AAD has provided two lists, http://www.vigil.aero/files/images/List_1.pdf and http://www.vigil.aero/files/images/List2.pdf, of the cutter serial numbers and the Vigil II serial number of those units that were originally sold with one of the affected cutters installed. The recall involves 65 Vigil II units and another 124 individual cutters shipped worldwide (the remaining 10 were never shipped and were already in possession of AAD.) Out of the 189 units, 28 of the Vigil II devices and 24 individual cutters were shipped to the United States. Vigil USA, the U.S. distributor for Advanced Aerospace Designs, has already contacted each equipment dealer or individual in the U.S. who has purchased one of the affected Vigil II or individual cutters. However, cutters may have been sold by equipment dealers to other customers, so not all cutter purchasers may be known. Vigil owners who have had the original cutter replaced could possibly have one of the affected units, even though their Vigil serial number is not on the list. Checking the cutter serial number against the list provided by AAD is the only way to ensure that it is not one of the affected cutters.
A Vigil owner who has never had the cutter replaced only needs to check the Vigil’s serial number with the list of unit serial numbers identified by AAD to determine if it is one of the affected units. A Vigil owner who has had a cutter replaced should consult with a rigger and may choose to open the reserve before the next jump, locate the cutter serial number and check it against the AAD list. If it is not one of the affected cutters, the reserve can be repacked. If it is one of the affected cutters, contact AAD about getting a replacement cutter prior to repacking the reserve.

11/13/09 · New National Wingsuit Record Claimed
In less than six months since the USPA Board introduced the largest wingsuit formation category for state and national records, an international group of wingsuiters gathered at Skydive Elsinore in southern California to test their skills. The Elsinore group is claiming a new national and state record of 68 in a diamond formation on November 11, which would eclipse the existing national record of 25 set in Illinois by more than double. Full certification is expected to be received by USPA, with ratification expected a short time after.
